Ordinary People

A series of paintings depicting members of the royal family, first shown at the Chelsea Art Club in 1992. Although the exhibition was an immediate sell-out, the press ran the story in a miasma of outrage, and, due to the furore, the paintings were removed from the walls and the artist was suspended from the Club. He was later de-rusticated, or re-hung. There was an enormous fuss at the time, and the story made it onto the front pages of the Sun and News of the World, and prompted articles in the Times, Daily Telegraph, Evening Standard, Sunday Express, Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and dozens of foreign newspapers and magazines. Brian Sewell, in an article criticising portraits of both Princess Diana and the Queen Mother as being vile, pale and wretched, stated, "The ribald honesty of Don Grant's amateur watercolours showing the Princess nude, but for hat handbag and high-heeled shoes - mildly erotic in the mode of late medieval Germany - are infinitely preferable to the meretricious rubbish of (Douglas) Anderson and (Andrew) Festing, and are at least in the long English tradition of lampoon and caricature."
